The Scrum Alliance certification program bridges the gap between theory and practice.

The journey to mastery begins with a Certified ScrumMaster or Certified Scrum Product Owner course. These courses provide a solid foundation to help you make the paradigm shift to managing a project using Scrum.

As shown in the flow chart, a CSM or CSPO course is essential for moving toward the more advanced certifications of Certified Scrum Practitioner, Certified Scrum Coach, and Certified Scrum Trainer. Details of the program are shown below.

Certified ScrumMaster (CSM)
Prerequisites Students are expected to attend the CSM course with a working knowledge of Scrum. This knowledge can be obtained by reading books, articles, and web info about Scrum.
Intended For Individuals who will work on a Scrum Development team. Strong focus on the role of the ScrumMaster.
Certification Process Attend, participate in, and complete a Certified ScrumMaster course.
Renewal Process You do not renew your CSM designation. To maintain active membership in the Scrum Alliance, you pay yearly dues

Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO)
Prerequisites Students are expected to attend the CSPO course with a working knowledge of Scrum. This knowledge can be obtained by reading books, articles, and web info about Scrum.
Intended For Individuals who will fulfill the Product Owner role on a Scrum project. Examples include: sponsors, stakeholders, business analysts, etc.
Certification Process Attend, participate in, and complete a Certified Scrum Product Owner course.
Renewal Process You do not renew your CSPO designation. To maintain active membership in the Scrum Alliance, you pay yearly dues

Certified Scrum Practitioner (CSP)
Prerequisites Must be an active Scrum Alliance CSM or CSPO and demonstrate at least one year practicing Scrum.
Intended For Any individual participating on a Scrum project, including ScrumMasters, Product Owners, Analysts, Developers, Testers, etc.
Certification Process
  • Download and complete CSP application package illustrating hands-on Scrum experience.
  • Send the completed application to the certifying committee. Upon acceptance, this application will be published on the website and accessible to all active site members.
  • When you are approved, you will receive notification of your acceptance (the process may take up to two months) and a link to pay your $100 fee via a secure website.
Certification Duration Two years
Renewal Process At the end of year two, you will need to renew your certification by submitting a new application for approval. Each year, you will need to pay the $100 fee to maintain active membership.

$100 annually (includes $50/year Scrum Alliance membership fee).

Certified Scrum Coach (CSC)
Prerequisites
  • Must have been a Certified Scrum Practitioner for at least one year.
  • Must have at least 1,500 hours of Scrum coaching over the past 5 years.
  • Must have two client references who can verify your coaching experience.
  • Must have been actively engaged in the Scrum Community over the past 3 years.
Intended For

Individuals who have a history of success working with Scrum teams and are applying “coaching” skills with one or more current teams and/or organizations.

Must also be an active contributor in the Scrum community.

Certification Process
  • Login to download your CSC application.
    • Please complete this entire application. You should edit the Microsoft Word document to contain your answers. 
    • Applicants will be required to submit two client reference letters that clearly illustrate experience in helping others learn and use Scrum.
    • Please feel free to include other documents along with your application package that you feel provide present your qualifications.
  • Submit your complete CSC application package to the certifying committee. If you have any questions regarding this application, please send them to the same email address.
  • Pay your $100 application fee. From this point forward, the approval process could take as long as two months.
  • The certifying committee recommends candidates to the Scrum Alliance Board for final approval. 
  • Once you have been approved as a coach, you will be asked to pay a one-time fee of $650 (enter discount code newcsc).
    • For the next two years, you pay annual renewal fees of $750, which includes the $50 Scrum Alliance annual membership fee.
    • At the end of three years, you'll need to submit a new application for renew your certification.
Certification Duration Three years
Renewal Process

Must obtain 60 PDUs over three-year certification period. PDUs may be earned for Scrum coaching, professional activities, self-directed learning, professional education, and Scrum community involvement.

$100 non-refundable application fee.

Certified Scrum Trainer (CST)
Prerequisites
  • Must be a CSP for at least one year before applying
  • Must also be an active contributor in the Scrum community.
  • Strongly recommend that applicants co-train with an active CST before applying
Intended For Individuals who have guide-level knowledge and the skills to perform classroom training on Scrum-related concepts.
Certification Process
  • Login to download and complete a CST application.
    • Please complete this entire application. You should edit this Microsoft Word document to contain your answers. 
    • The package will contain
      • Completed application
      • Scrum “resume”
      • Detailed description of training experience
      • Examples of training materials
      • References from co-trainers and references from students who were trained.
    • Applicants will have substantial requirements for the on-going maintenance of their certification.
    • Please feel free to include other documents along with your application package that you feel provide present your qualifications.
  • Submit your complete CST application to the certifying committee. If you have any questions regarding this application, please send them to the same email address.
  • Pay your $100 application fee. Please note: In 2008 the board is reviewing CST applications on July 28 and October 23. New CSTs will be announced by November 1, 2008.
    • Complete applications submitted by May 1 will be considered in July
    • Applications submitted by Sept 1 will be considered by November 1.
    • Dates for 2009 TBD.
  • The certifying committee recommends candidates to the Scrum Alliance Board for final approval. 
  • Once you have been approved as a trainer (approval can take as long as four months), you will be asked to
    1. Pay a one-time fee of $7400 (enter discount code newcst).

    2. To maintain your active CST status, you will pay annual renewal fees of $7500, which includes the Scrum Alliance annual membership fee.

    3. Both fees are payable annually or quarterly.

    4. There is an option to be an inactive CST. Contact us for details.
Certification Duration Two years
Renewal Process

Must obtain 40 PDUs over the two-year certification period. PDUs may be earned for Scrum coaching, professional activities, self-directed learning, professional education, and Scrum community involvement (the same PDU units may count for both CSC and CST).

Must train at least 25 CSMs or CSPOs every year.

Cost

$100 non-refundable application fee.

$7400 upon acceptance of application (enter discount code newcst).

$7500 for second and subsequent years.

All annual fees include the $50/year Scrum Alliance membership fee.
